Validity
From when you can use the travel product, depends on the date you are enrolled in your study programme. The 1st day of the month is leading. For instance:
- You are enrolled in your programme from 1 September. You applied in time for your travel product. You can use your travel product from 1 September.
- You are enrolled in your programme from 5 September. You can use your product from the next month, that is from 1 October.
You can check your enrolment date with your school or university.
Applying for the travel product later
If you apply later, you can travel from the month following your application. You can only travel in the same month if you applied on the 1st day of the month. You cannot get a student travel product for a period in the past.
Free or discounted travel
When you apply for the student travel product, you choose either a weekday or a weekend subscription. Read below to find out when you can travel for free and when you can travel at a reduced rate.

How much is the discount?
The discount applies to all public transport in the Netherlands. The discount is:
- 40% for the train in 2nd class
- 34% for the tram, bus, metro and water bus.

In the train, 3 people can travel with you at a reduced rate Link opent externe pagina in een nieuw tabblad. This is only possible during off-peak hours.
